Mass Exodus ep Review

  • Jun. 12th, 2009 at 10:49 AM
HUMANWINE
Artist: HUMANWINE
CD: Mass Exodus ep

Label: Nervouse Relatives Records / Self Released

With a previous EP ("Rivolta Silenziosa") the US wandering HUMANWINE introduced us full-on to their narrative world of Vinland. They matched the metaphor-as-politics (and vice versa) stories with a gutter-circus-folk sound style that was a stunning marriage of simplicity and subtlety.
It's sepiachord required listening.

On their full-length follow up, "Fighting Naked", the band continued to explore their Vinlandish themes but the music had more of a "rock" feel. The end result was good, but the band seemed a little uncomfortable in their new skin.

The new EP ("Mass Exodus") finds the band returning to a three song format and returning to more pared down arrangements. The results are arresting.

Of the three pieces found on this CD the last, "Our Devolution is Televised", best continues the work that Vinland fans love. It's political (of course) and features an infectious circus bounce. It could easily have been slipped in as the fourth track on "Rivolta Silenziosa" and held its own against the great songs found there.

The opening piece on this new EP is also overtly political: "1st Amendment". Its "be the media" messsage might come across as a nuts-and-bolts politcal screed... were it not so spare and, well, pretty. It builds and flows nicely showing off the performers individual strengths especially Holly Brewer's remarkable voice. Its a perfect appetizer for the middle piece: "Megan Rose".

"Megan Rose" seems to pre-date the existence of HUMANWINE as a band and features Holly alone, just her voice and a piano. When the song starts you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is merely a ballad of friendship to the title character. It *IS* that, but takes stomach-wrenching turns that are all the more powerful because you don't see them coming. This is the key to tragedy: you don't see it coming. "Megan Rose" is a beautiful, seductive PUNCH IN THE GUT that will make you cough up a bit of blood and still make you want to play it over and over... even if, like me, you found yourself on the verge of tears the first time you heard it. This really is one of those songs that descriptions fail for, you have to sit down and listen to it. And you should.

HUMANWINE's DIY aesthetic has never been more clear in their sound ~and~ in the EP's visual presentation. Not only does the look and feel of the packaging clearly place the band in the line of descent from seminal grass-roots political rollickers Crass but HUMANWINE does something other bands never seem to do: give credit where it's due!

Lots of politically charged punk bands have aped the art of Crass, but this is the first time I can think of where credit for inspiration is given to the artist responsible for this distinctive look: Gee Vaucher. Kudos.
Recommended.

A Far Cry (Boston's proudly unconducted Chamber Orchestra)We are a group of musicians bound together by our desire to share great music and great art with people who are young, people who are mature, those near, and far. The music we play is music we love, and music we don’t want to live without. We have a mission to bring together all the loves of our lives, those that range from film, dance, and visual art, to our love for each person who lives the joy and suffering (and in-betweenness) that inspire the art of life. We are excited to have you join us as we discover how we can communicate our passion with different audiences, with different artists and with each other, to be a part of the cries of need and celebration that make up the world in which we live.

The Boy Who Spoke Clouds (AUS) The Boy Who Spoke Clouds might be described by some as indigenous, world, tribal, folk, neo folk, electroacoustic, or some amalgamation of the above. Imagine Sufjan Stevens meets Jesu. The Boy Who Spoke Clouds is an intimate portrait of Adam Casey and his native Australia and emotes something lost in much of today's music; no doubt having a tendency to put down roots wherever he is listened to. The Boy Who Spoke Clouds will be launching their debut album (released on Sun Sea Sky Productions) and touring as a three piece band across the Eastcoast of the USA, and the Southcoast of Canada throughout June/July, 2009.

These are the times, my friends. And these are the days. Where the world becomes malleable, palpable. When novelty and genius are within our reach. We are cautioned against being passionate about these things by tales of progress turned to greed and of technology turning on us. And yet, the golden light is just right, the clocks are synchronizing, the stars are in alignment.
- c. lantz

This is what we celebrate tonight. We celebrate these transient times, with these transient artists.

Wearables, craftables, and edibles provided by a plethora of local and regional artisans. We will take a dinner break (with DJ) at 6:30 pm - please bring your own sack meal, a picnic to share, or food can be acquired from two of our vendors. Vegan options available. Adult beverages can be purchased by 21+ individuals.

Willow and I are so excited about bringing HUMANWINE to Seattle. Our friends from Sock Dreams will be arriving from Portland to vend excellent foot/legwear.

Larger poster is here. Leave me (Libby) a comment if you’d like to help out at the event or hang flyers–I have an 11×17 hi-res PDF in the wings for print-yr-own.

10pm - Abney Park
Abney Park comes from an era that never was, but one that we wish had been. An era where airships waged war in the skies, and corsets and cummerbunds were proper adventuring attire. They’ve picked up their bad musical habits, scoundrelous musicians, and anachronistically hybridized instruments from dozens of locations and eras that they have visited in their travels and thrown them into one riotous dervish of a performance. Expect clockwork guitars, belly dancers, flintlock bassists, middleastern percussion, violent violin, and Tesla powered keyboards blazing in a post- apocalyptic, swashbuckling, Steampunk musical mayhem.

9pm - HUMANWINE

There are only two bands on the bill, HUMANWINE is direct support for Abney Park. Doors are @ 8pm and the show starts with HUMANWINE @ 9pm.

HUMANWINE
Avast Comrade!
Here we are and February is upon us. We hope you've settled into the idea that we have a new President in the U.S.A. and that there is a bunch of work that needs to be done. Keeping a positive attitude is great but we have to step up and make sure we keep the pressure on our City Council, Representatives and Senators, the President and his cabinet starting from the community and working our way up because no matter how hard you yawn at the thought of politics your everyday life is greatly affected by the decisions made there; The Patriot Act for example.
Family is key and family is a BIG word, it is not determined by birth. "Sometimes families change, we have to make our own". Get to know your neighbor, the post office folks, local shop owners, etc. Just saying "Hi", smiling at a random person, letting someone out into traffic on Centre street in J.P. because you know they won't get in otherwise or stepping outside your own boundaries to help someone who's in obvious need. These actions ripple deeply into our fragmented society and increase the chance of unifying us as a people.

Oliver and all lovers of puzzles; This one is for you!

MakeTV is a growing branch of Make Magazine, they decided to branch out by documenting their 'findings' in the form of video and PBS picked it up. The show we were part of was about Jake Von Slatt, a HUMANWINE "Mechanical Saint",donated to us, all of our major appliances, a boatload of cable, piping and a distro box. He mentioned to MakeTV that we had made use of a bunch of his donations and thought that they should come and check us out. They all came over for a show @ Awesomeville and an interview about our house, the bus. Jake documented his experience here.

Recycled Movement

Last fall we stepped up our conversion on the bus racing against the inevitable looming New England winter. In November we had an important meeting with Al the Ninja and Father Blake. We decided to put the bus up on blocks in N.H. for the winter so we can reconnect in May and complete the final stages of the conversion with clearer heads and warmer weather.
All the plans remain the same, we will be back in May to finish the last little bits of the bus' elec./heating/plumbing system and to complete the transmission overhaul. We are in the planning stage of a June show at The Paradise so get ready for that one it's going to be a grand event, we'll be armed with a new album of material, we're writing like maniacs out here. We miss you Boston!

Please donate to our Recycled Movement if you can by going to HUMANWINE.org and clicking the "Recycled Movement" button.

National Debt Clock Runs Out of Space

In a sign of the times, the National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing figure. When the national debt topped the $10 trillion points last month, the sign could not display the full amount. A larger debt clock is scheduled to be installed next year.
Meanwhile, the prominent political analyst Larry Sabato has criticized both the McCain and Obama campaigns for their handling of the economic crisis.

Larry Sabato: “On this, I’m going to be critical of both candidates. One lives in Disney World, and the other lives in Disneyland. They’re separated by a continent, but they’re united in proposing loads of new tax cuts and lots of new spending. You know, apparently, no one on their staff has told them that we’re bankrupt, that we have ten trillion in national debt, with trillions more being ladled on top.

P.s.
When you go to vote, demand a paper ballot. If you are held back from a paper ballot and must use an electronic voting machine THEN bring a phone camera, camera or video recorder with you and tape the process.

The lines will be long, they want you to turn away. Bring a chair, water, snacks, a book and be vocal to those around you who say,"I'm just going to go, this is going to take forever."

A Message from HUMANWINE:
What have we been up to? With the help of our Mechanical Saints, we are working around the clock, on our bus making it ready for the great beyond. We've pushed our deadline twice and are now 3 weeks behind but we're on track.

When it's too dark or cold to work on the bus we're inside random warehouses working on our computers building programs like, AM-TV, The NRR STORE and the MUZIK PLAYER, editing the various sound/video recordings that will soon be released and writing new songs. We have been accepting renegade studio time with folks we know to finish up recording our next album which we will release before we ship out. We have a recording our our live show with A Far Cry (unconducted string orchestra) @ A Warehouse in Allston, MA that we are editing and making ready for d/l.

RECYCLED MOVEMENT:
Every day we get closer to this being a reality. Please donate to our Recycled Movement if you can by going to HUMANWINE.org and clicking the "Recycled Movement" button.

HUMANWINE
When we hear our songs in our heads we hear them in a very orchestral way but we have never had a chance to hear see/hear/feel these songs dripping with strings, covered in a fine layer of violins, laid down in a bed of cellos and upright bass and wrapped lovingly with viola.
September 28th, in a warehouse in Allston Massachusetts, with A Far Cry our dream came true.
8 songs were chosen  6 days before the show.
M@ transposed all of the songs within 3 days and e-mailed them off to Courtenay Vandiver (cello) and Ashley Vandiver (violin) who then built parts for all the songs in 2 days.

Day of the show
Sunday
A Far Cry trickled into the space
we went over each song once
The moment we heard the first song
We were seeing the song or real
for the first time
and a few hours later
our dreams came true

Ken from Brighton, MA said,
"I really enjoyed the performance and the backing strings section - it brought back the mystique of one of Pan 9's *you just had to be there to see them* shows to Rugg Road."

Then night began with What Time Is It? Mr.Fox, a welcomed, reoccurring visitor of Vinland, who filled the room with songs from their new album, tales of Joan D'Arc, love and Religious interference performed by Brian King (piano/guitar), Nathan cohen (violin), Courtenay Vandiver (cello) yes she was in all three bands! and Mike Leggio (double bass).

Brian King said,
"I have spent countless hours, driving through snowstorms, hurricanes, to concerts, shows, plays, movies, anything, hoping to be moved, shaken, or transformed.  Unfortunately I'm often let down.  Something is missing.  I'm just not taken over or taken in.  Or I just don't believe it.   But I still continue to go, knowing that at some point someone is going to reach into my chest and shock me back to life.   Sunday was one of those nights.
Everything felt real.  No clever aesthetic.   Just the raw beauty of true passion and talent transcending ego and creating something alive.   I'm beyond thrilled to have been able to be there and part of it.   That night I dreamt in strings. "

The center of the evening was filled with the sounds of Boston's Unconducted String Orchestra, A Far Cry who's set included the likes of Bartok & Mozart performed by Andrew Eng, Annie Rabbat, Ashley Vandiver, Courtenay Vandiver, Frank Shaw, Jesse Irons, Loewi Lin, Margaret Dyer, Megumi Stohs, Sarah Darling, Sharon Cohen

Amy Toxic said,
"
It was a fantastic night. You sounded brilliant! Like it was meant to be that way.
It can’t get much better than hearing both Bartok and HUMANWINE live on the same night!"

Afterward members of A Far Cry came up to us and said, "I've always wanted to play to a standing audience."
Think about it
you're in an orchestra
the audiences generally are sitting and reserved
they clap at the end of each piece
and remain silent otherwise.

The set up of a Concert Hall lends a hand in creating
the atmosphere of institution unless you look deeper into ART.

It can seem like a "one way energy stream".
If the audience doesn't give back
the energy coming from the stage
hits a sponge.

The CYCLE is broken
it can be draining

whereas
when the energy coming from the stage
is allowed to be a CYCLE
it is so enlivening

you don't even feel like
you're pushing.

For example
2 shows
1 week apart
The artist(s) put 100% into both shows.
NIGHT #1 the audience is like the aforementioned audience (sitting, reserved, docile)
NIGHT #2 the audience is REACTING to you (standing/sitting/crawling on the rafters, laughing, dancing, singing along, standing perfectly still with their jaws open in appreciation), the 2 shows will "feel different" to the artist(s).
The first night will be more of a drain and the second night will leave the artist(s) energized.

It's a symbiotic relationship between the audience and the stage.
As lovers of ART, we are often in an audience
as a part of the audience
you can tell whether an audience
is a CYCLE or a SPONGE

HUMANWINE shows have been filled with positive and open energy for a long time running.
We all feel honored to collaborate with so many wonderful bands
who we love
and to know that there will be the likes of YOU there reciprocating, inspires us all
to do it a while lot more.

Hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of Boston’s most promising classical music groups,” A Far Cry is making waves, experimenting with how music is performed and heard. A tightly-knit group of 16 young professional musicians, A Far Cry formed in early 2007, seeking the freedom and flexibility of a string quartet as well as the power and beauty of an orchestra. Operating with rotating leadership and no conductor, A Far Cry is generating interest not only in the concert hall, but also with its innovative model. All artistic decisions are made by vote as a collective, and the musicians take care of all the behind-the-scenes work, from booking concerts to designing programs. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, A Far Cry is also committed to social change and harmony, donating proceeds from concerts to homeless shelters in the Boston area, and partnering with other non-profits such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A Far Cry’s 2008-09 season holds engagements at the Yellow Barn and Kneisel Hall Festivals, concerts from Minnesota to Florida, and a growing hometown series in Boston.

We are thrilled to bring Dorian Wood to Boston! A monster talent: "The androgynous emotionality of Wood’s singing voice lends itself to the demanding theatricality of [his] lyrics, arrangements and production. The nakedness of a lover’s need and the wide-eyed madness that ensues when that need is not met twine around one another." - LA Weekly ----- "Dorian’s voice is evocative of those persons, places and things in your mind that ring like cultural archetypes (the carnival ring leader who knows everyone’s secrets, the fool lamenting at the moon, the gregarious saloon piano player), but these apparently familiar characters he seems to be depicting yank at the proverbial rug under you and demonstrate his dynamic cultural literacy. Though they draw from different sources, his songs’ emotional roots are firmly planted in his own experience." - Signal Tribune ----- "Wood unleashes gospel-infused wails and testimony that bring the audience…to a frenzy.” – The Advocate ----- "Dorian Wood is an instigator extraordinaire. A shape-shifter. A subtle court jester posing as a harmless house pet. An inspiring addition to the freakish world we now live in...a true artist in the purest sense of the word. Fearless, confident, filled with passion. His songs are beautiful without being pretty, well orchestrated, and creepy almost to the point of being masochistic, all the while continuing to work under the guise of ’folk music’." - Citizen LA Mr. Fox goes on at 9pm sharp Garvy J: 10pm Black Fortress of Opium: 11pm Dorian Wood: 12 midnight

WHO is MR. FOX? a dahl character? bluebeard-like bachelor? a teacher? a friendly furry creature with an intimate knowledge of clocks? any ideas are welcome. Never fit into a scene. never subscribe to a specific genre. just try to be true to the guts of the song. whether it be gospel, carnival, psychedelic blues, folk, country or a collage, we hope the truth of it comes through. Lots of songs about relationships and their many beautiful and demonic manifestations. songs about identity, and trying to make sense of the inner workings of our own clocks. and of course the occasional "i just got dumped," "i'm afraid you're going to dump me," or "you smell" songs. So i write the songs and fantasize about being some sort of male annie lennox. nathan travels abroad like bartok, collects ideas, and basically proves you can play any type of music on a violin. so when we make music we get to be transported to turkey, alabama, ghana, hungary, ireland and sometimes pluto.

Knowing the every single year the Pentagon receives more money than they ask for deepens this wound even further, now, not only are our tax dollars going to more pork in the already misappropriated military budget but our money is actually going into ad campaigns in other countries to try and convince their populous that WE ARE GOOD, WE ARE GOD, but it's not even US it's the American Dream; they are hoping to run that faded vision of our lady of Liberty standing for freedom, truth, justice, the American way through enough Photoshop that no one will notice that she is dead.

HUMANWINE
In this cesspool of media that we are exposed to ever increasingly here on MySpace, on TV, on billboards, in magazines, in newspapers (now turned rags), on the radio waves and in our workplaces & Schools, remember that there are people who would rather your play online games, buy a bunch of crap you DON'T NEED and continue a monotonous dialog of the latest Hollywood "Celebs" to DISTRACT YOU FROM WHAT IS REAL.

The fact remains that these Corporate Entities don't care what you do as long as you don't get involved in their political maneuvers.

The truth is you only have to eat, drink, get some sleep and maintain a body temperature of about 98 degrees.

The overwhelming Corporate Sponsorship and blatant presence at both the DNC & the RNC was/is appalling.

"It’s like we’re forgetting the public sphere." stated Rep.
Dennis Kucinich

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: One of the enduring problems of our political system, whether it’s about Democrats or Republicans, is the role of corporations in the political process. We have a real problem in America, where corporations have infiltrated our political process so seriously that they’re putting labels on all of us. There’s not one on me, but I can say that when I go to my own Ohio delegation, and I see “Dominion” on everything—and that’s a natural gas company that’s jacking up everybody’s rates, and they need the support of a state administration to do it—don’t think that I don’t understand what that’s about. We’re in the Pepsi Arena. Obama is going to give his acceptance in Invesco Stadium. What’s this about? It’s like we’re forgetting the public sphere.

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: So, you know, a lot of us aren’t going to be particularly satisfied, but so what? You know, the voters made their choice in the primaries. You’ve got to respect that choice. And what I’m going to be doing here, tomorrow, at the convention, is to talk about the economy and look at those issues around which we can be united. Be certain that under a Democratic administration, if that administration is showing aggressive tendencies or is putting us on the edge of a war again or not taking us into a direction of peace, I am not going to be quiet. I mean, I’m going to continue to talk about the direction America should go in. But we can’t let those differences that we have right now cause us to fracture at a time that we really have to bring a change to the White House.

Conventions are not private events in a Democracy.

They just are NOT. This is not HUMANWINE's opinion.

This is not a ploy to get you to vote for McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden.

This is not a Political Statement.

This is a Public Service Announcement.

The Press and the public (around 840 people) on several instances were whisked away by rented thugs with no name badges or identification. These were people sending in "troops" with no name badges so they would not be held accountable for what they were about to do and boy did the EVER DO IT.

I Witness Video is an organization that equips people planning on attending marches/demonstrations/protests or other lawful acts backed by our RIGHT TO ASSEMBLE. The cameras are turned on for the duration and turned in at the end of the day. These tapes are carefully scoured armed with time/date to assure exactly the time and day of any particular offense either by and officer or a civilian.

The New York City Police Department has been ordered to pay out 1,000's of dollars already to people grossly mistreated by these cops who think they won't be held accountable but video is very damaging testimony and almost always wins.

I Witness Video's Site reads...
all Freemen ... have a Right publicly to remonstrate the Abuses of Power, in the strongest Terms, to put their Neighbors upon their Guard, against the Craft or open Violence of Men in Authority, and to assert with Courage the Sense they have of the Blessings of Liberty - Andrew Hamilton, from his 1735 defense of John Peter Zenger, in a landmark trial which helped to establish the principle of freedom of the press in America.

THE POINT OF ALL THIS IS THIS:

WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?
Independent Media and You

BUT if you are suffering from overload and become easily distracted by the aforementioned Corporate distractions that only play on your insecurities and force you to make a fool of yourself by not only "following trends" but also explicitly screw yourself by keeping yourself OUT OF A DIALOG ABOUT REAL CURRENT EVENTS.

It IS cool to care.

Please seek alternate media outlets during this coup to destroy the great nation and ultimately the whole Earth with it's Arrogant, short-sighted Corporate Decision Making.

Deforestation was not done BY you but watch what you BUY, you may support it just by what you eat.

Like the nerves in our body so is the whole Earth connected and we're just plain shitting all over it.

We care, so we sing/write/act out about it. We're not alone, thankfully we were inspired to carry on a long tradition of Questioners who have worked their whole lives for the next generation to enjoy a safer, cleaner, more peaceful Earth to inhabit.

The Corporate Sponsors of both conventions paid for that security to keep our words and opinions barred from the convention, a political convention, a public convention.

This is a direct action against the public by the corporate.

The Corporate legs grow every time WE buy their crap, that we don't need, which only enslaves us in the end. Wrapped in a noose that we bought because it was on sale.

  Avast Comrades!
The Solstice show this weekend will be our last show in Boston, as residents.
We will be celebrating the arrival of summer! We set sail at the end of June.
Where will we go?
everywhere.
But First we're off to N.H. to get the bus inspected for another year. M@'s bro, Nate is gettin' hitched way up north on the 8th of July and we'll be bouncing around New England playing shows in VT, NH and ME, working to finish the interior and exterior of the bus for our departure from "the nest" in late summer. If by chance we do have another show in Boston after June, it will be as guests.

An open letter to Boston
Boston,
You are everything we hoped you would be. We found gold here, none of the players have been natives but you have been a meeting place. We stayed for 3 years, that's longer than we've stayed anywhere. Though your media has misunderstood us a bit and confused us a bunch as "the next big thing" and filled your columns briefly with fluff stories that served as a distraction from what is real, all and all you've come around. We think you have a good idea of what we are, how we work and why we even make muzik in the first place.
You have figured out that HUMANWINE is not an entertainer and what we make is not manufactured for easy or passive consumption.
You have seen that we use muzik as a soapbox from which we will never shout, "Buy our Crap! Stare at our glamorous photos and feed our vanity! Create a Frenzy for us! Give our lives meaning!" Rather, We are active, conscious members of the human race who also write songs. The cause and the message would be cheapened and would go down simultaneously if were to take an active or passive role in the music machine of today.

We say this because so often we hear the words..."When you make it big" or "I'll say I knew you when". Only time can prove how very much we mean it when we say that we have no intention, ever, at all, of "making it big" and please don't hope to find yourself saying, "I knew them when" let it be that you will still know us because we are all working for the same goals. Exposing the Bush crime family, The Rothschilds and Rockefellers and other coups against humanity for the sake of the wealthy elite, supporting investigations into the 9-11 cover up, celebrating documentaries such as Zeitgeist, seeking out REAL NEWS like DemocracyNow! with REAL JOURNALISTS like Amy Goodman, supporting bills in the House (Kucinich: D- Ohio) to IMPEACH Bush and Cheney which work to TRY THEM AND THEIR CABINET IN A COURT OF LAW FOR WAR CRIMES IN THIS ILLEGAL WAR, supporting the abolition of Human Trafficking, TORTURE and the END of the U.S. occupation in Iraq. Supporting, researching and utilizing renewable resources, reusing AND recycling what we bring into our lives, taking care of ourselves and our friends, making more friends, slowing down, slowing down and thinking clearly about our environment, the new buzz words "Extreme Weather", flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes and our impact on our Earth as a result of a greedy, FABULOUS, false, cheap, "just throw it out" after it's not fashionable consumer lifestyle.

The music business doesn't have room in it for thinking clearly, not enough room for us anyhow. We strongly discourage you from spending your money in Sprawl+Mart. We thank you for your constant support and hope that you continue to look closely at what you are eating, drinking, listening to, looking at and supporting because you are taking it all in aren't you, you are a global citizen with everything at your fingertips.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.
We all are.
YOUR STORY is interesting.
YOU matter.
Fight the urge to live through other peoples lives because you think they are more interesting than you, they aren't, they're selling you something.
You don't have buy it.

ARE THEY USING THEIR BAND TO SELL REVOLUTION?
ARE THEY USING REVOLUTION TO SELL THEIR BAND?

Keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the floor, it's a fantastic time to be alive.
Oh and...

Apparently there are now only 5 nations on the world left without a Rothschild controlled central bank: Iran, North Korea, Libya, Sudan and Cuba. Not too long ago there were 7 nations on the list...Can you guess which 2 they were?
Afghanistan and Iraq.

Who do you think the U.S. Government will target next?

There is a celluloid element throughout much of HUMANWINE's music, an audible spinning of dusty movie reels. The stories in their songs unfold in a fictional place called Vinland, a surreal space full of characters good and bad. This strange new world highlights an important artistic truth that perhaps best explains HUMANWINE; creation is control. The authorial power that comes with defining a new world is all encompassing and unlimited in scope and range. Writers place readers into scenes and breathe words in to their characters, while painters grace their subjects with light and weight and let viewers take it all in. Good musicians string together melodies and rhythms, mapping out a specific listening experience full of peaks and troughs. When in that space in their world we're subject to their creation. The regular rules no longer apply.

At the core of HUMANWINE are M@ (Matt) McNiss and Holly Brewer. While living in New Hampshire they spun in the same musical circles for half a decade before working together. Once the connection was made, the duo began producing music at a prodigious rate. Eventually moving to Boston in 2005, the accolades soon followed as HUMANWINE won the WFNX/Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll and the "Best New Local Act" at the Boston Music Awards in 2006. The following year, their album Fighting Naked won "Best Album of 2007" by WBZ TV. The band has enjoyed recognition but is still hard to pin down in terms of their overall sound.

"I wouldn't describe us as anything," says M@. "Muzik: that's what we play."

"...If anyone listens to HUMANWINE without a visual representation of what we mean, I feel like they're getting half the story." explains Holly.

In HUMANWINE's visual world, Vinland is a diverse realm. There are YerYer, Enjoyeurs, Hordes, and Abrogated Munificents. There are conflicts, struggles, and men overboard. There are mindless cogs who never question their place in the machine. Vinland may be a well-constructed fantasy but the issues HUMANWINE address through the individuals and institutions contained within are modern and familiar. What should listeners take away from their episodic visits to this world? "If they feel uncomfortable that they're not alone," says Holly. "If they think that it isn't right to have a cubicle and a rat-like job and to be unhappy all the time. It's not normal for humans. If you feel uncomfortable about it, it's fine: you're totally on the right track."

For M@, the idea of acceptance extends beyond the issue of corporate employment. "One of the most major questions ever that we ask is 'What are you consuming'?" he says. "What are you taking in? What are you believing? What are you taking for granted? What are you putting into yourself?" Modern consumption comes in many forms and perhaps one of the most insidious and ubiquitous mainlines goes unnoticed on billboards and buses. "A lot of what we talk about is advertising because you're just bombarded with it," says Holly. "I don't want to become desensitized to it.

The band draws on personal experiences and observations but tries to avoid the confessional, first-person approach that plagues many acts. "It's not to say we don't sing about ourselves, says M@. "We try to include greater numbers than just ourselves when we're writing a song. We put our own thoughts and emotions into this but we try to make a bigger thing. The world is way bigger than just the two of us."

Although HUMANWINE's music is an amalgamation of genres and styles (there are dirges and waltzes and metal riffing) their lyrics have a decidedly punk edge to them. This designation is a complicated tag though. Holly recounts several instances of people approaching the band after shows saying, "Your music is not punk but your lyrics are punk, but I guess that's really punk!" M@ explains that HUMANWINE, "is not 'punk rock' but punk is a mindset so anything that goes through that filter has that attribute."

Holly continues, "Before punk turned into, 'let's drink beer and throw beer bottles at squirrels in the park,' it was actually kids like us being so rip-shit about the classism in England that they would focus more on class rights and women's rights and they truly felt it was 'cool' to be political. It was cool to give a shit, and it's not like that anymore especially here. Punk to me has always been synonymous with being a politically active member of your community."

While HUMANWINE has carried on punk's philosophical torch, they have eschewed the more aggressive front that is associated with the movement. The decision to address social and societal woes in a less grating manner is a deliberate one. "Nobody likes that or learns from just being yelled at or forced into something," says M@ of punk rock's confrontational tactics. "People learn much quicker and much better and actually evolve at a greater rate, I think, if you just present them with the pieces and let them put it together. And people do. You have a serious thing to portray to others but it's generally done angry, people are screaming and yelling."

Although listeners are brought fully into the world of HUMANWINE, there is no a soapbox to be seen. They may pass through the looking glass but aren't berated with a manifesto. "We're not yelling at people. We're being creative and singing about it in a way to allow people to enjoy the music. If they want to take that other step and look a little bit deeper they start to see what we're really talking about. It all goes back to allowing the people who listen to our music to be creative with it in their own right because we're not necessarily spelling every single thing out."

Sharing their world is second nature for HUMANWINE. Orbiting the band is an ever-changing lineup of musicians who are pulled in for a show (or a series of shows) and then set loose. Seeing the band perform one night can be an entirely different experience a month down the road. The musicians work with M@ and Holly separately from one another and often meet for the first time on stage. It's all part of the expansive but porous world that the band has created. "We hand pick our top-notch favorite players out of every band in the area," explains Holly. "That violin player, that cello player, that upright bass player. We're not a band wrecker because everyone goes back to their band afterwards. It's serious but it's not monogamous. It's like you're a mistress band" The broad talent pool that HUMANWINE draws on also means that there are very few dates they can't play. "It never stops the show from happening," says Holly. "That's a great benefit."

While M@ and Holly are still the creative force behind the HUMANWINE universe, they appreciate the multitude of benefits that come from playing with other people. "We do write all our own material," says M@. "But at the same time, because we're picking these top-notch people, we feel very safe at having the input of these other musicians. It makes it a whole new thing and it enables us to re-look at the song, to say as we're teaching, 'Hey maybe you play this instrument. Let's make this sort of different, actually, [and] try this thing.'"

The band also attempts to deconstruct the rigid line that often divides the audience and the band. "A huge part of it is getting people...who wouldn't normally do something in public like play an instrument or bang on something or run around with a painting," says M@. "It's a way to evolve what we do."

As unique a system as it is, HUMANWINE wants to expand this idea of a musical collective to embrace a larger body of people. "Our dream," says Holly, "is to collect other bands who are like-minded and have a community with them; a circus-y vibe with actual collaboration. If we could get five to six bands that all have buses, that all have circus acts, that have Bread and Puppet based themes with puppetry and a political message, all the lines blur and you're one monster."

To that end, HUMANWINE has taken careful steps to retain control of the creative world around them. They were signed to a label but now release and promote music through their own label called Nervous Relative Records. They handle their own artwork and graphics. They are also in the process of converting a bus into a mobile home and tour vehicle. "We're control freaks," laughs Holly. "We have to be in control of everything because our names are on it at the end of the day." M@ agrees with that punk ethos but acknowledges that it's not an exclusionary or narrow view. "DIY or die," he says. "A lot of what we do we see it, hear it, smell it, feel it, taste it, so to have somebody else do it would be more work in the end. We need to be involved with absolutely everything but we love working with other people. We love having new energy."

In the same way that HUMANWINE constructed the ethereal Vinland, they have managed to create their own world within the conventional sense of reality and the rules have been written. The traditional ways of addressing issues in songs and playing shows have been supplanted by a new methodology. The old ways have been cast aside in favor of widespread collaboration, stylistic crossbreeding, audience involvement, and an undying commitment to controlling what they put out and let in. Once you cross that threshold and are under the big top, enjoy the show.
